Opposition criticizes Modi as new Parliament building leaks after Delhi rains

Opposition leaders launched a scathing attack on the central government after water leaked into the new Parliament building following heavy rains in Delhi on Wednesday evening.

Congress MP Manickam Tagore submitted a notice for an adjournment motion to discuss the building’s “weather resilience.” Tagore emphasised the urgency of the matter, noting that water had leaked inside the Parliament lobby, a path used by the President of India, highlighting potential issues with the building’s integrity just a year after its completion.

Tagore proposed forming a special committee, including MPs from all parties, to inspect the building thoroughly. The committee would investigate the causes of the leaks, evaluate the design and materials, recommend necessary repairs, and establish a maintenance protocol. He urged all members to support this initiative to ensure the safety and integrity of the Parliament.

The construction of the new Parliament building, part of the Central Vista redevelopment plan, was criticised by the Opposition, especially as it took place during the Covid-19 pandemic without consulting the public or MPs. Many opposition parties boycotted the inauguration in 2023.

Akhilesh Yadav of the Samajwadi Party tweeted that the old Parliament building was superior, suggesting a return to it until the new building’s issues are resolved. Trinamool Congress’s Mahua Moitra mocked the PM, referring to the new Parliament as a “monstrous edifice” to Modi’s ego, noting that the building’s issues symbolize broader concerns post-2024 Lok Sabha results.
